Press and Events

The Austen Connection engages in public conversations about Jane Austen and women’s literature through events, gatherings, and media. Here are a few of the amazing organizations and events we’ve had the pleasure to engage with so far. If you’d like to include the Austen Connection in your event or discussion, you can find us directly at austenconnection@gmail.com, or give us a call at 573.239.9837. Reach out!

Press

Electric Lit

As readers of Electric Literature magazine, we were thrilled to be included in their “14 Literary Newsletters” roundup, and with great company!

The Christian Science Monitor

The Monitor is a wonderful journalism site and we’ve written about books with the team for years - so it was lovely to participate with them to do a couple of pieces that are Austen and Austen-adjacent, including:

This piece about the various cultural retellings of the story of Persuasion, in the runup to the film:

And this piece about writing Black history and romance with author Vanessa Riley.

SubstackInc Shout-Out!

We were thrilled to be recognized as a featured publication this year, by the mothership SubstackInc - it’s so far been amazing to be part of this journalism community that Substack is creating.

Substack’s SoNovelicious

Our sister “Bookstack” newsletter SoNovelicious generously featured the Austen Connection in its series “One Extraordinary Bookish Podcast” about books podcasts - you can read the full piece here.

The Columbia Daily Tribune

Our local paper, the Columbia Daily Tribune and writer Aarik Danielsen, were the first to seek out the Austen Connection for this lovely piece - we were a bit taken aback, and also grateful!

Events

‘Persuasion’ in NYC

Sarah Rose Kearns’s stage adaptation of “Persuasion” played to sold-out audiences at NYC’s Bedlam Theatre during its Fall 2021 run. We got to join in a TalkBack with the wonderful actor, playwright, and Janeite Nandita Shenoy.

The ‘Open to Persuasion’ online conference, with The Holy Theatre

Playwright Sarah Rose Kearns put together this inspiring day of discussions, one of which we moderated, featuring scholars, creators, and authors focused on Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and in support of NYC’s The Holy Theatre.

Austen Con!

The Melbourne, Australia group 24 Carrot Productions and director Sharmini Kumar produces the amazing annual Austen Con, and for the 2022 event the Austen Connection made an appearance with friend and author Devoney Looser. Fun!

Skylark Bookshop and ‘Sister Novelists’

It was also a pleasure to see Devoney Looser in person - and to do a live, in-person and IRL chat with her about ‘Sister Novelists’ at our fabulous local, Skylark Bookshop, in Columbia, Missouri.
