thank you for reading and engaging even while disagreeing! I have always read it feeling Emma is quite safe, but am open to interpretations.

Emma is riding in a carriage with a male driver at the reins and at least one male servant hanging on to the back--her own family servants or the servants of John Knightley, and Mr. Elton is going to sexually assault her? When her brother-in-law is the most powerful man in the village and her other brother-in-law is also there in town on a visit? How drunk would he have to be, to do something that insane? Ahem, disagree with this reading.
