Shakespeare as Kate! Jane as Charlottes Lucas! Elizabeth didn’t change for Darcy! This makes so much sense. This is why we read and re-read and watch multiple adaptations on stage and screen, because truly great literature is always revealing something new about itself, and ourselves.

It's so true! It's a sort of wonderful alchemy. Thank you for being here! 💮

OMG, I absolutely LOVED this reading of The Shrew!!! I had to study and write a paper on this for my MA a couple of years ago and although I love Shakespeare usually, this play had me stumped. I hated it. I wrestled with it. And I finally wrote a paper (using research I found) suggesting that Kate's turnabout in the final speech was due to her suffering from Stockholm syndrome! But I love your interpretation here, of Shakespeare identifying with Kate, because something I couldn't get my head around with the play was that I had always loved his strong female characters, and thought of him as a feminist. I love that you suggest that Kate paved the way for his later females. (Also, 'Ten things I hate about you' is the absolute best 90s romcom and requires a yearly viewing!)

Oh so glad, Kate! Thank you for engaging with it and being open to the wild interpretations! And yes we must all go and immediately watch the Heath Ledger/Julia Stiles version! 💮

Lovely! Haven't read Taming since high school, mere decades ago. Thanks!

Oh wow, this really moved me. I have always loved the Taming of the Shrew (or Kiss me Kate) but always felt so uneasy about that love because of the end, and you gave the play back to me in a form I can now embrace without guilt, and this literally made me weep at the end of reading this. Thank you!

Thank you so very much for sharing this, Louisa. It makes me so glad that you feel you can take back this play! Yes, take it, it's yours to love!❣️❣️

Literature aside...Fascinating analogy ....coercive vs one sided infatuation in modern day society ?? Burnout may be imminent.

Yes thank you - we could go much further with the analogies, and perhaps we shall! 🌸
